We had a terrific launch at the Cabbagetown Festival this past weekend, reading to groups of children as they came out from performances of “Aladdin and his Magical Lamp” (Cabbagetown Theatre Co.) three times on Saturday and four times on Sunday.
Big thank yous to everyone who stopped by, to my mom (as always) for all her help at the table both Saturday and Sunday, to Kev for his help at the table and on video on Saturday, and Lulu for helping at the table AND at the readings on Sunday.
Check out these reviews so far for Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast:
"Regan W.H. Macaulay has a flair for creating memorable characters and her imagination most certainly delivers once again in her children's book, Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast. One of the telling signs of a well-written story for children is when multiple lessons can be discovered within each reading. Such discoveries are like finding gold for the soul. Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast is full of valuable lessons, such as friendship, the cost of bullying and the redemptive power of loving the unlovable.
The colourful illustrations by Wei Lu are filled with delightful humour, expression and have a sense of movement that truly lifts the story off the pages.

"Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast" is an extra special story for me. It is set at Riverdale Farm (located in Cabbagetown, Toronto), a place I visit often and find inspiring! The whole Cabbagetown neighbourhood holds a special place in my heart - I've been visiting, often weekly, ever since I first moved to Toronto (way back when I started university at Ryerson), sometimes with my mom. We visit Riverdale Farm, lunch at Peartree restaurant or Park Snacks, weave our way around the Necropolis grounds (where my step-dad is buried and Kev and I have a plot there as well...we also have plaques there commemorating my grandparents (Mom's side) and my father, who passed away almost one year ago) and the grounds of the Farm, too. I'm always going to Menagerie Pet Shop, too, so I can get food for my amphibian babies. I've attended many Cabbagetown Festivals, and they're truly a blast! I always make sure to set aside some time to tour the arts and crafts show in Riverdale Park West. I've also worked with a couple of the fine folks that run the Cabbagetown Theatre Company during the Slaw Festival an embarrassing number of years ago. They present a children's panto play every year at the Cabbagetown Festival, and this year, I'm proud have my launch linked up with their show, "Aladdin and his Magical Lamp"! I will be on the Necropolis Chapel lawn (where you can also buy tickets for their show), while the show is performed inside the Chapel. For all these reasons, and because "Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast" is one of the stories I wrote as an assignment for my Writing for Children and Teenagers course a good thirteen years ago, this book launch is extra super special to me. Not to mention that Kevin came up with Mixter's original design!

COMING SOON - SKYPE VISITS TO ANY SCHOOL, ANYWHERE!
For now, I'm available to visit schools in Toronto, and soon, the GTA and Southern Ontario.
Together, we can create a unique and multifaceted learning experience for your students!
$150.00: Reading of the picture book plus Q&A and minor discussion. Book order forms left with students as well as a couple “take away” items (a certificate or bookmark, stickers, colouring page or something else each student can take home) and 1 copy donated to the school library. 30-45 minutes. Any of my books would work well with this level:
$250.00: 1 class visit with reading, post-reading discussion and trivia related to the book, q&a and activities (which I will copy and bring as handouts — all black and white except in the case of Tamara-related certificates, which I will also sign), 1-2 copies of the book donated to the school library, loan of the lesson plan in case the teacher would like to do some activities separately (before or after my visit) and I will leave book order forms and a couple “take aways” for the students to take home. 1 hour or so. Any of my books can be used at this tier level.
$450.00-$500.00: Class visit with reading, post reading discussion and trivia, q&a and introduction to “poster”, “diorama”, “research” or “list” related activities (as determined on a case by case basis). Students will have 2 days - 2 weeks (as determined by teacher/class schedule) to work on their assignments and I will return for a second class visit to see presentations by the students and their work. Activities such as those done at the $250 level tier can also be done during my first and/or second visit (including certificates, in the case of Tamara). Book forms and take aways will be left for students to take home and a set of up to 15 books are included for the class and library. Lesson plans will be loaned out for the duration of the session and if teachers wish to sign up for a visit at this or the $250 level next year get to keep the lesson plan binders. 1 hour + per visit. This tier works best for Tamara Turtle’s Life So Far, and possibly also Libby the Lobivia Jajoiana which is out Fall 2019.
Please note that a “class” is considered to be no more than 30 students. A minor price adjustment based on number of students/activity copies and books will be made if a class has more than 30 students, or if you wish to combine classes. Teachers will be given the appropriate number of activity sheets to cover all the students in the class. Any loaned out lesson plans or books that have been damaged will need to be purchased for $? per binder and $12.99 per book. Finally, I will be able to provide a brief contract for any school visit tier purchased.

The first advance review for my latest picture book (coming September!) Mixter Twizzle's Breakfast...see what children's author Karin Larson has to say:
"Mixter Twizzle’s Breakfast, written by Regan W.H. Macaulay and illustrated by Wei Lu, is the story of Mixter Twizzle, a mischievous creature living below the chicken coop at Riverdale Farm. His devilish escapades render him an outcast on the farm. But is this lonely life enough for Mixter? Kids and parents alike will enjoy following Mixter’s antics around the farm as he stirs up trouble.
Ms. Macaulay’s creative use of language and alliteration in her story telling make this a fun read. MIXTER TWIZZLE’S BREAKFAST allows kids to learn the benefits of treating others well without preaching the lesson and is highly recommended for readers ages 4-7.
Ms. Lu’s beautifully bright and animate illustrations really bring Mixter Twizzle and his story to life.
